Pete Thompson has practiced law for over thirty years, and maintains a diverse practice that involves both litigation and counseling engagements.
For much of his career, his work has been focused on the litigation of significant insurance disputes involving issues of coverage and/or alleged “bad faith” by the insurer. This work has involved him in trial court and appellate engagements in state and federal courts around the country, involving a wide array of lines of insurance that have ranged from directors and officers liability, professional liability, and general liability policies to first-party coverage under commercial property, builder’s risk, and employee theft policies, among many others. He has secured a number of notable victories over the course of his litigation career. These victories include the Eighth Circuit’s unanimous 2012 affirmance of summary judgment in favor of a primary insurer, represented by Mr. Thompson, that had been sued by an excess insurer for an alleged “bad faith failure to settle” an underlying wrongful death case in which a Missouri jury returned a $46 million verdict against the insurers’ common insured.
His insurance practice also includes the representation of individual and business clients who need assistance in navigating and resolving the issues that arise in connection with their insurance policies. He maintains longstanding relationships with several commercial and residential real estate developers, and is often brought in to provide assistance when insurers deny or question coverage for significant claims, sometimes on grounds that even sophisticated business consumers are ill-equipped to understand, much less challenge. He has worked closely with executives, risk managers, and brokers facing issues under general liability, builder’s risk, management liability, and pollution liability policies, among others. His work on behalf of developer clients also extends to the drafting and review of manuscript policies and endorsements as well as contract documents and provisions that relate to insurance issues.
Prior to joining Sperduto Thompson in 2013, Mr. Thompson was a founding partner of the Washington, DC law firm of Thompson, Loss & Judge, where he practiced for nine years, and before that was a partner with the Washington, DC, law firm of Ross, Dixon & Bell, where he practiced for eighteen years, seven of them as Managing Partner He began his legal career in his native Ohio, where he was a litigator for six years with the Cincinnati law firm of Paxton & Seasongood. While in Cincinnati he also served as one of the founders of the Volunteer Lawyers Project, a pro bono initiative.
Mr. Thompson has been named a “Washington, DC Super Lawyer” in every year since the award’s inception in 2007, and has spoken at seminars and conferences in the United States and abroad, addressing subjects ranging from insurance and litigation issues to law firm management. Outside of his legal pursuits, he has been involved in a variety of volunteer activities, and currently serves as president of Rock Creek Rowing, a competitive masters rowing team based on the Potomac River.
